Senator Sanders Conference on Global Warming
Max Wilmoth wasn’t expecting to have to scrape the snow off her car early last Saturday morning before picking me up and heading to Montpelier. After hurried good mornings and further surprise at the snow accumulation from the night before, the two of us headed to a conference on global warming in Vermont’s capitol put on by Senator Bernie Sanders. Our mission was to represent the InSite team during a private pre-meeting with Senator Sanders before attending a portion of the rest of the conference.
When Max and I arrived we realized we had largely underestimated the event. The private pre meeting turned out to be multipurpose room full of students from institutions in the surrounding area and the conference that followed was held in a large auditorium with nearly ever seat occupied. It was both informative and inspiring to listen to Senator Sanders speak on the topic of global warming and we were inspired by how well attended the event was.
Listening to the conversations about climate change provided a great reminder as to why we, and every member of the team, continues to pour time into this project and to take on the daunting task of building an entirely sustainable house. It reminded us of the strong connection between our efforts to create and model new ideas for sustainability to the problem of global warming. After we listened to a number of speakers, Max and I talked with other groups in attendance about our project. We wished we had brought more information about our project to share with the many people in attendance, but were happy to have been involved.
